Who am I?

I am a Clinical Scientist working in Audiology and I am also going through the process of being implanted with a cochlear implant. This site will chart my progress and I hope will be a reliable and helpful resource for others.

Read my 'About me' section to find out more.

What is a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant is a device which is surgically implanted into the cochlear (inner hearing organ). An external processor sends digital ly-coded sound and this is encoded into electrical impulses that then stimulate the hearing nerve and send the signal up to the brain.

Visit the 'More information' page to learn more about cochlear implants.

Am I eligible for a CI?

Only an Audiologist or ENT doctor will be able to tell you if you are eligible for a cochlear implant.

In the UK there is strict eligibility criteria for a cochlear implant but it is important to ask your Audiology team if you want to find out more. If they think you could be suitable they will be able to refer you to your nearest implant centre for assessment.

Recent research suggests that as few as 5% of people who are eligible for a CI  in the UK receive one.
